  • Cool Shaderball scene for Vray 5

    Hello,

Shaderball is in sub-D and has good UVs, different lighting setups are included for look-dev. Enjoy!
For 3Ds Max 2019-2022, you will need to load the ACES 1.2 config in your frame buffer
Edit, the scene uses ACES workflow. If you swap the renderer to CPU/GPU, make sure to change your color management to ACEScg

Looks great but is there any chance you could save it own to an earlier version?
    www.dpict3d.com - "That's a very nice rendering, Dave. I think you've improved a great deal." - HAL9000... At least I have one fan.

Do you use this with highlight burn or something else? Display color space is set to OCIO?

            Hello,

I don't use highlight burn, you will need to load the ACES 1.2 config in the frame buffer
ACES tone mapping does a great job on highlights

I haven't had time to experiment with ACES yet in any way. I've loaded the aces 1.2 ocio file in the display correction and set the view transform to sRGB. Where do I control the highlights? I've set the renderer to Vray CPU though, do I have to set the color management in the render settings to ACEScg too?

Hello Muhammed, unfortunately the link doesn't work for me, it says, the file is in your dustbin. Can you please resend a working link?

SOLVED: I copied your link into the browser, now downloading works. Thank you very much for sharing.

In the Frame Buffer, input colorspace needs to be ACEScg. Like what I have in my screenshot in my post above

                  And View Transform = sRGB

Then you need to swap color management to ACEScg, and check "Auto RGB primaries for Bitmap textures"

Now you are rendering in ACEScg, the workflow in Vray is very easy.

One more thing is about your Color maps (bitmaps/colors for diffuse and HDRIs/Softboxes for your lights or maps for translucency)
You will need to use sRGB primaries in Vray Bitmap like this,

Click image for larger version Name:	Screenshot_73.jpg Views:	0 Size:	28.3 KB ID:	1121530

All other texture maps (for things like roughness, bump mapping, displacement) this RGB primaries needs to be RAW

Setting your View Transform to sRGB (ACES) simply takes care of your highlights, this ACES View Transform includes Tone Mapping that expands mid-tone contrast and compresses the shadows and highlights. The aim of that is to produce an image on an sRGB monitor which is a good perceptual match to the original scene. This Tone Mapping/contrast is not just a LUT, it is set carefully by color scientists of the Academy
For me personally I adapted to this ACES look throughout the years, I might use a curve to reduce the contrast a tiny bit.. but overall I like this ACES look a lot

If you still want to control the highlights and do your tone mapping manually, it is still possible. Swap display correction to sRGB and add a filmic tonemap layer

Great thx man. I understand now, but that means I need to convert every little thing in my scene for this workflow? So all my assets, premade materials etc... that's a LOT of work.

edit: even with these correct settings applied my image seems quite blown out, see attached screenshot.

Your ACES 1.2 folder needs to be this size,

Click image for larger version Name:	Screenshot_79.jpg Views:	0 Size:	65.8 KB ID:	1121535

                        And it contains this,

Click image for larger version Name:	Screenshot_80.jpg Views:	0 Size:	38.0 KB ID:	1121536

ACES system is quite massive with many color spaces and transforms to manipulate them.

Not really, there are tools that automate the process. Take a look at this discussion here

                        https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...43#post1076743

Leles's script converts everything with one click, I have been using it in my scenes. I'm not a big 3Ds Max user, there are similar ways to deal with this in Maya/Houdini

I think it is worth to adapt to ACES overall in Vray's workflow, it is something Vray does better than everyone else and it makes things easier in many ways

                        Best,

                          Hey Lele,

I cant get the script to work in max 2023.. It pops up but when I click it to change, nothing changes.

                          Thanks.

                            Hello!
As mentioned in the script's thread, the script is discontinued and shouldn't be used.
You should instead follow the documentation's guidelines on using sRGB material under ACEScg colorspace.
