Irradiance map is allways much worse then BF when we speak about image quality and lighting quality.

glorybound What HDRs you usually use for better lighting you talking about?

It's interesting to have your take on this. My experience is the opposite and I am trying to learn how to better control HDRI lighting.

For me it's a lot easier to control the lighting/shadow with vray sun/sky. Also - I almost always also use the "Filter: overide" with 100% white to get rid of as much of the light coloring as possible. I do this because otherwise, like when using HDRI, the lighting colors all my materials and thus changes their appearance. Any texture map I'm using, often from something that I or others photographed, already has "baked in" environmental lighting by virtue of being a photograph. This is especially true for exterior materials. So adding the sky/sun or hdri color seems like it changes the map appearance to something other than what I'm trying to replicate. This becomes even more problematic when getting specific paint colors from a client and matching those. Like for instance Sherwin-Williams has rgb values for all their colors.

I'm not suggesting one way is right or not right. I have always suspected that somehow my approach or tactic in this regard was flawed in some way. I understand that allowing the sun/sky or HDRI to cast it's color tones scene wide has a nice unifying effect. So far I've only had luck using HDRI for exterior dusk shots. When I've tried it for day light exterior's it works but seems like so much effort trying different HDRI's and adjusting thier positions that I default back to the vray Sun/sky.

Sorry if I have hijacked this and gone off-topic.

For me I find that most of the HDRI's available are Northern Hemisphere / European lighting, which is often too soft, desaturated and cold to suit the rather harsh, crisp and warm lighting we get here in Australia. Twilight HDRI's are a different matter and are usually pretty effective.

The major factor for me is sun angles, as we tend to show our designs at specific times of day. This becomes particularly important when we do retail centers and we need to know when and where the sun will be hitting shop fronts. Which brings me back to why we use LC over BF, BF just is too inefficient where there are large areas of blank white spaces, such as the ceilings.

I have tried not using an HDRI and my clients have called me on it a couple times, with comments like, "why doesn't it look nearly as nice as the other one you did for me?".

Okay, here they are. Between 5 minutes (foyer) and 20 minutes (others). The Foyer is losing a lot of fine detail, but the others are not bad. These were taking 1 1/2 to 2 hours using V-Ray defaults and an HDRI, however, they were super clean and lacked no detail. I guess it is the game of speed vs. quality.

There's some heavy GI splotches on the window and door frames (but the client will never notice that)
The ceiling gloss might be a tad much on the ceiling?

LOVE the carpet in the bedroom, came out super nice! Is that forest pack? Looks very good, except where it meets the wall there's a brightness change there almost as if you changed something in post but the mask wasn't updated

Make the back of the tv a bit more matte (and add some ventilation slits by cheating a map onto it)

Although the design might call for cool-white LED downlights, it always looks so cold in renders (unless you have dark blue dusk coming in through the windows)
If it's not a major issue, then maybe warm it up in post a bit

I rendered them out using an hdri and default V-Ray, but for some reason, the forum isn't letting my upload. Once I can, I will.

Yes, FP and I did color correct it in post. Something broke and it stopped looking so nice, so I did a cut/paste in PS from the old one into the new one. I'll have to see what happened.
