  • Animation with moving stuff. BF too slow - will IM work?

Working on an animation at the moment where a whole heap of stuff moves into shot. This is an interior scene with strong directional lighting through the windows, so rendering the moving elements separately could be challenging.

The usual method (I think) would be LC/BF and up the LC subdivs to 3000 or so and increase the retrace threshold from the default 2.0 to something like 6.0 or 7.0. However, as this is an interior scene, the render times using this approach are huge. Switching over to LC/IM renders the frame much, much quicker (to the tune of 10x quicker), but I am unsure how this will work with lots of moving geometry.

Any thoughts on this before I run the inevitable time-consuming tests? Will IM cause a lot of blotchiness?
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

In my experience if you have lots of moving objects, even though BF may take slightly longer, overall it will save you time worrying about splotches and re-renders. (using defaults, but changing the settings like you mentioned, retrace 8 minimum)
If you're going to be rendering this in-house on your own farm, maybe try Beta2 if you can spare the time. I've been very happy with Beta2 so far. I haven't used IRMap actually since VRay 2.4

I would go with BF+LC and combined with vray denosier you can get really good results even with high noise threshold.
Last year i was working with irradiance map for an a ination and swaping to brute force surprisingly save us alot of time
You can also give solidrocks animation wizard a try, it is free for 120 frames to see if it will works for you.
      https://www.solidrocks.subburb.com/anim-moawiz.html
It will automate the process for you in 2 clicks so look into that too.

Wow - didn't even realise Solidrocks was still going. We got that a few years ago but found we were losing 'knowledge' of how VRay was working, so when we had to troubleshoot we struggled.

Yes the same here.. I remember using it the first time in 2013 for quick animation.. It was my first real animation project and it saved me from tweaking.
The good thing is that you can push it further if you have a good knowledge in V-Ray by changing some values to fit your needs and let the plugin do the rest.

with IM all the moving parts will still probably need BF with help of VRaySphereFade. not sure if it?s worth it though.
