  • AxF-Material renders negative value pixels

    Hi,
the most recent version of the X-Rite AxF-Plugin is rendering negative pixel values. I don't know if this is an issue caused by V-Ray or by the plugin.
    V-Ray Next 3.1, Max 2017.

    Regards

Can anybody confirm this issue exists?

Here is an image illustrating the issue. It does not happen on all materials, only on a few.

Thanks for the report. We've contacted X-Rite to determine where the issue may lie. I'll notify you when we have more information about the matter.

We discussed the issue with X-Rite. The particular AxF shader file, where the issue is present, will be required for a proper debugging. Could you send it to support@chaosgroup.com? Mention this thread in the e-mail.

Thank you for the provided scene. Oddly enough, the issue is not reproducible on our end with the provided scene and shader file (identical host app and V-Ray builds). The issue may be a local one.

                Try the following things:
                1. Render the scene on another machine
                2. Re-install the AxF plugin
                3. Wild guess: Are you using the "AXF_FILE_PATH" variable? If yes, try manually browsing to the file on loading and see if that makes any difference.
                4. If you're loading the file from a server, try it out locally

Should things not work out with the suggestions, it may be necessary to arrange a TeamViewer session for further debugging.

Apart from No.1, here are the results:

2: Switched to AxF plugin version 1.3.016192, same problem
3: Not using this variable, same problem
4: Copied onto my harddisk, same problem

Tested on another machine in the office, same error:

We tested it on multiple machines as well and it renders as it should. One last thing, could you attach a log from the rendering? Otherwise, I'll write to you by e-mail to arrange a TeamViewer session.

Thank you. A few more questions. Have you overclocked your system? If yes, try resetting the clocks and voltage to their defaults. During which phase does the issue manifest itself - light cache, rendering, lens effects application? And in which pass (diffuse, lighting, reflection)? Maybe a video would be helpful.

No overclocking on our systems at all. The error is visible in the light cache phase and gets really bad while rendering. Reflection element shows some of the negative values, but most of them are in the specular element.
We can arrange a TeamViewer session. Please contact me using the mail adress I used to send the scene file.

We received feedback from X-Rite after providing them with the shader file in question. It seems the material has colors in its angular color table that are out of the sRGB gamut. This is its intended behavior, which produces negative sRGB values in the VFB and when saving EXRs. We are still unable to reproduce the phenomenon here, so we suspect it may depend on the hardware (we do not have a similar to your configuration here to test this, unfortunately). Fortunately, the differences are minuscule and ignorable.
