  • URGENT: Pixels with negative values in Specular Pass

    Hey guys,
I am in huge trouble right now. I rendered loads of images over the last days, and they all have negative values in the specular pass on certain layered materials with Triplanar mapping as blend mask.
The problem is that these Pixels are infinitely negative when I load them in Photoshop, so I can not paint or stamp them over. As soon as the specular pass is visible, the image is worthless. I am in huge huge trouble right now and I do not know where to start!
Scene file with stripped down part is sent, will post the ticket number here.

what if you clamp the triplanar before you apply it into the blend?

Already tried that. Both in the standard ouput node, also in a color correct. It gets a little better, but it still happens in some areas.

Just for kicks does it happen with embree off? I can't seem to see any other reason other then something funky in the shader setup, but I did have issues with embree in certain times.

Thanks Dmitry, I will try it with Embree off.
Anyway, it would be extremely helpful if someone from Chaos looks over the sent scene file. Yet even reply to this thread in any form.

If painting over the problem areas is an option (but not possible because how photoshop is dealing with the negative values) you could clamp the image before painting, nuke can certainly do this, I bet there is free apps that can do it aswell.

It looks like the issue is caused by the EdgeTex plugged into Bump Material applied to the object.
As for now you may try to modify it a bit in order to workaround the issue until we are looking into it.

There is also something involved with the Triplanar texture plugged into Bump slot of the VRayMaterial.

Svetlozar, thanks for taking a look at the file. I know that the problem is caused by the Triplanar texture in the bump slot. However, I see no reason for that. I already tried a lot of things, like clamping the black and white values of the textures. This minimizes the amount of dead pixels, but I can not get completely rid of them. I also tried inverting the textures in PS and disabling the invert checkbox, but to no avail.

Case has been added as a bug into our bug-tracker, I'll keep you posted for any updates from our side.
As for now, an option to workaround the issue is to rework shading network to not use Triplanar textures for bump property of VRayMtl.

If you can send me the original output .exr I may try to figure out a way to deal with those dead pixels at compositing stage.
Please send me also the composition where I can see how bad things are and how the actual composition works.
