      Regarding the hotspot and falloff. You can allready do this. If your light is set to directional 1. You can just plug a gradiant ramp in radial mode into the texture slot and use the output curve to control it exactly like shown in the brazil images. Theoretically you can use this also when directional is not 1 but than it´s hard to predict as the light becomes diffuse. But that on the other hand is the idea of Vray lights, beeing diffuse. It would need a Vray Spot light for this option to really make sense wich is kind of obsolete as we have a well working max spot light.
      You can use a gradient in the projection slot of a spot light as well to control the falloff precisely as described above. Btw. a radial gradient in a projector slot is also pretty good to create a something like a custom ies distribution inside max.

        That is true. If you add cone angle / penumbra and dropoff to the 3dsmax vray light, then we wouldn't need a circular set of barn doors.

          Sure you can do this, in the same way I can place 4 planes around my light to create barn doors. But having these controls directly in the light makes it far easier. For example, if we had a visible cone for hotspot and falloff, we can precisely place these values in the 3d scene rather than adjust a gradient, render, adjust, render, etc. I appreciate the workaround, but I feel having it in the light is far more versatile.

                          Yes. It is not physically correct. But it is useful for artistic lighting control.

                            We do not have arbitrary attenuation curves for the V-Ray lights, unfortunately. The standard 3ds Max lights do have them, however, and you can use those if you wish.
