  • V-Ray for Revit Settings Pop Up

We have had users ask if this pop up has to appear every time you close revit? I think it makes some sense, but i am just following up to see if this is something that can be eliminated or done within revit before close and not after the app closes.

    thank you!

    Hi,

This message can pop up in 2 cases:
    1. You haven't saved your Revit project and you are closing it.
    2. You have opened an old Revit project for the first time. The message will appear no matter if you have saved or not the project, because it upgrades the old V-Ray settings. Note that it will appear only when opening an old project for the first time. Once you click "yes", next time when you open the project, it will work as described in 1.

This also pops up when editing Families. This pops up even if not opening anything to do with V-Ray. 99% of our users are not using V-Ray and want to stop seeing this prompt. This is such an issue, we are at risk of having V-Ray removed? Can it be disabled or optional through config?

      Thank You

To follow up on the importance / annoyance of that pop up to the Revit team. The group that manages Revit firm-wide is willing to remove Vray from Revit just because of that pop-up window. It's a bit extreme of a measure, but there has to be a way to turn that option off.

            Hi all,

We know that this problem is really frustrating and are eager to solve it. If you are using the latest version of V-Ray for Revit (i.e. 3.70.02), we know a few scenarios when this message is shown without clear reason for the user:
            - the first time a project is opened after V-Ray is upgraded from older version; The reason is that usually *.vprops files also need to be upgraded and that is not done as part of the installation process. It is done on per project basis.
            - the user has started a render; That is an issue with the V-Ray VFB which state changes after each renderer and we also save it to the *.vprops file. We are doing it in order to persist any changes made to VFB options. That is a clear VFB problem and we are working on eliminating it for our next major release.

As there is a number of features that we are working on for the next major release that could take longer than your patience would stand, we may release a hot-fix for this particular problem. It will be a preliminary dirty solution but better working for you. Let's just confirm if the following is acceptable for you before we release it:
Add option to config.json file: "alwaysSaveOnProjectClose": true/false.
This option will be considered instead of showing the popup message.
If the user saves the Revit project prior to closing it, V-Ray settings will also be saved just as they are now.

Please advise and we will proceed with this hot-fix release as soon as possible.

              Hi all,

The fix for this issue is available for download from our website, follow the link. The V-Ray for Revit version is 3.70.03.

              How it works:
              1. Close Revit
              2. Find the V-Ray config.json file (it can be found here: C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Chaos Group\V-Ray for Revit 20**)
              3. Open the file with a text editor (for example Notepad)
              4. Add the following option "alwaysSaveOnProjectClose": true/false (and don't forget to separate it from the previous options with a comma!)
When set to true, the latest V-Ray settings you've set up will always be saved when you exit the project.
When set to false, the V-Ray settings will be saved on Revit project save.
              5. Save the config file

In our next release, there will be an option to reset the settings to their default values as well.
Let us know if you have any questions or you need assistance.

              Best,

Thank you. This will be very helpful. Where is the master default config.json file that is copied to appdata? We would like to set this as the default for all users and we have a few more changes we need to make like default quality, enabling swarm, defaulting to buckets, and setting do not use local machine. We use VDI/RDP for our users and would like to totally lock a few of these settings so they were grayed out or hidden completely from the UI.

                  Hi,

There is no accessible master config.json file. This file is created or updated by the installer or on Revit start after the installation and includes just a few options but not the defaults for all settings in the UI. Additionally, the hot-fix has no such options like hiding/disabling UI options. We have seen this request several times and will see if we can provide such options in the next major release.

This hot-fix release includes only an option to stop seeing the teasing "Save V-Ray Settings" popup message by setting default behavior like "Always save on close" and "Close without saving" depending on the configured value as described above.

Yes, it also contains the default values for the Swarm settings that can be configured during installation, too. But the user still can change them in the UI.

                  Best regards,
