  • Caustics in Vray 3.6

I've been unable to produce caustics. I've watched a lot of tutorials and and tried all the different settings...photon search radius, etc. Anyone have any advice? (Mainly using caustics for swimming pools, btw)

Hello, and apologies for the very late reply.
Have you been able to achieve Caustics in v3.4 but are unable to do so in v3.6?
If you're still having trouble, please share a sample project (use Extensions > V-Ray > Pack Project) with us by emailing it at support@chaosgroup.com for further investigation. If the archived file is too large, you can use a file-sharing service of your choice.

    Kind regards,
    Peter

Was this resolved? I'm having similar difficulties producing caustics for the swimming pool effect.

No, I havent' had time to mess around with it.

Peter, to answer your question, I don't think I've used caustics since v1.48/9, which I used to produce some stunning pools with. I believe I tried it once in Vray 2 and couldn't make it work and just never bothered again until last month. I've been slammed over here!!! :0 I can get great looking caustics in Vray for Max, but the photon radius makes since...up the vray sun photon radius until it surrounds the pool. I can't figure it out in VRFS. There isn't any sun in the model, so where is the photon radius emanating from? Like I said, haven't had time test more settings in a sample scene or even think about it.

A quick tutorial on the ins and out of setting up caustics for a swimming pool just in Vray for sketchup would be very helpful....the 3ds max tutorials just dont translate to sketchup as far as caustics (in my experience so far). Seems the help docos for this are just a bunch of jargon/definitions; don't really explain the steps you need to do.

        Thanks!

So....Does anyone have any advice on getting caustics to show? I'd love to give my swimming pools some more pop. Like I said, I just don't get this setting and can't find them explained anywhere. There isn't physical sun in the sketchup model, so how can I set my emit radius? I've tried a lot of different setting and can't get any caustics to render.

So why is everybody so tight-lipped about this? Is it a secret? Just too busy to share? Or does nobody actually know how to make pool caustics render in vray for sketchup?....

Hi, No tight lips here, just busy! Anyway, I was testing this a couple of days ago for windows. It is very hard to setup I think but with some tweaking it worked I think. I don't know if these settings work with a pool though.
And it can probably be optimized. Hope it helps.
