  • SketchUp purge deletes linked V-Ray materials

    Hello,

I've noticed that when using the "purge unused" button that I am far too used to pressing in SketchUp that it can delete V-Ray materials that aren't directly used in my model but are linked to, or the base for, another material.

i.e. when I make a toon material after purging the toon material remains but the base material has been removed.

I've searched the forum and found similar things mentioned like in the linked post below from several years ago, but I can't find an answer or a solution to this.

Is there a work around to this problem?

    Many thanks,

    H

I used to just have one object (with faces) that is hidden (often nested, to prevent accidentally being un hidden) and assign the base materials on there.

That way, as far as SketchUp's concern the material is actually being used, but just not shown anywhere.

Thanks! I'd thought about doing that but it's going to be difficult on larger and more complicated scenes.

I guess it's just an added piece of workflow to get used to putting into practice if there's no other way around it!

This should no longer be an issue in the upcoming v3.60.02.

        Kind regards,

Just an fyi guys, the "purge model" via SKP is a pretty big no no because of proxies, linked materials, and just the fact that SKP doesn't know what vray is doing with materials. My recommendation is to purge and clean up a model upon importing (before any vray happens). At any point you can safely purge components (component tray, hit the drop down to "in model" and then the arrow to "purge unused"). Same with layers.

DO NOT use any skp function to purge materials though - vray has its own special button for this via the asset editor (go to the materials tab and make sure "material list" is highlighted and you'll see the broom to purge via vray).

edit: should also mention to be wary of any "cleanup" plugins that delete automatically: items that are hidden, stray edges, etc etc. These are great upon import, but once you have some proxies and vrscenes in the files, they start messing with your links and your going to have a bad day.

Peter.Chaushev That's good to hear that you all are working on integrating the SU purge function. Losing "hidden" materials has been a constant annoyance since the very beginning when proxies were introduced in 2.0

Oops, please disregard my previous message!
I was referring to the Purge unused materials functionality of our Asset Editor. Didn't read the OP properly.. It's been a long week..
As delineator already mentioned, the SketchUp purge function may have some undesired effects. To purge scenes containing V-Ray data we recommend using either the Purge unused materials (which I already mentioned) or Extensions > V-Ray > Tools > Wipe V-Ray data from Project.

                  Apologies for the miscommunication!
