  • GPU support for Macs

So with the new iMacs using better AMD cards, is there any clue as when GPU support will be back for OpenCL? Is this an Apple thing? There are a couple of renderingengines that can use the GPU on mac (Thea, Blender) so why not Vray? I just got the latest iMac and the difference in Blender is mindblowing. The speed increase is about 10x faster on certain scenes than with the last generation iMacs.

    Best,
    Peter

GPU Acceleration is currently available on MacOS only for Fermi-, Kepler-, Maxwell- and Pascal- based NVIDIA cards.
At this point I have no new info to share on OpenCL support in V-Ray 3 for SketchUp.

There will be, however, some major improvements included in the next feature update. More about this will be revealed prior to the release.

    Kind regards,

Peter, Thanks for the info. So rendering with GPU (AMD) for Macs will not be possible for the foreseeable future... That's too bad. One question though, can V-Ray for Blender use the GPU?

V-Ray for Blender can utilize GPUs. Info is available at https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ealtime+Engine :

to use the GPU engine you need video card that supports following:
        OpenCL 1.1 or higher
        CUDA 2.0 or higher

The CUDA engine or V-Ray RT GPU works on NVIDIA cards with the Pascal, Fermi, Kepler and Maxwell architectures.
For users of NVIDA cards, we recommend the use of CUDA engine when rendering with V-Ray RT GPU.

Although the RT (GPU) Engine can be utilized for rendering it can't update changes to scene at this time.
Furthermore, you can check the discussions at https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...blender-forums

        Kind regards,
        Peter

          Best,
Support for macOS does not depend on us changing something, so we can't tell when or if it will happen. You can still use external GPU boxes with NVIDIA GPUs though.

Thanks for the answers! Very quick response! I will look into the apple forums to see if there will be updated OpenCL drivers in the next version of MacOS. Since they are going to support VR you should expect some updated drivers as well. If that is the problem of course.
Anyway the wish remains and we'll see in the future. Thanks again for the quick answers.
