  • Converting Vismat to Vrmat

I apologize if this question has already been posted and commented on.

    I'm working in Rhino5/Vray2.0
My question is: is it possible (and/or necessary) to change the file extension from a vismat file to a vrmat file? ex. 18kg.vismat is my current material - can I simply change the file extension to 18kg.vrmat and will it still be readable in Vray2.0?
Furthermore, will it cause a problem if there are both, vismat AND vrnat within the rendering?

I appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

    Hello,

It is not necessary to change vismats files to .vrmat.
In most cases, renaming the file extension works without issues. However, older (binary) .vismat materials created before v1.5.1 cannot be successfully converted this way. Additionally, full backward compatibility of v3.0 vrmat files is not guaranteed in V-Ray 2.0.
Having both .vrmat and .vismat files in a single scene will not cause any issues.

    Kind regards,
    Peter

      Hello Peter,
are you guys working on some sort of importer/converter for those binary files?

As I have built up our .vismat database from 2007 onwards, we are currently looking at a pile of historic materials which we cannot use anymore in V-Ray 3.40.

      Thank you!

      Best,
      Matthias

        Hi, Matthias

        I have a same case on it.........., so I can't use 3.4 now(I upgraded), and they asked me, I can't use vray 2 if I upgraded 3.4.....

yea, it's a bummer that you cannot run multiple versions on one machine. Having access to multiple computers is a bonus here, otherwise you can't even look up the settings of your old vismats to recreate them one by one in 3.40
But I've just found a little comfort in the following workaround (for the time being the best option, I suppose):

To some degree it is possible to preserve materials or an approximation thereof by deselecting [Assign material by plug-in] in the Layer Material window.
The downside: using Rhino's standard materials slows down the render, significantly.

One more question: would it be possible to open and save a super-old binary file in VfR 2.x to convert it to a 3.40-readable vismat?

            Thanks,
            Matthias

              Hi, Matthias

No, it just only to see on rhino file......! and I found 3.4 can't to read v2 .visopt file....!

That mean v3 can't read all v2 file.....!
